To this end, we are strong supporters of open-source software because we know the benefits for both us and our customers:

• thanks to code availability, people can adapt, improve or create new applications for a system, which results in a benefit for the entire community of users;
• the freedom to distribute the program promotes its extension and implementation, which boosts the supply of services around it;
• this makes no one to be bounded to a single vendor to modify or extend the product: it generates no dependency but trustness.

As active developers of the open-source machine translation platform Apertium from its start, its technology and its language pairs, we can adapt it to the needs of our clients. We also have experience in the creation of statistical machine translation systems based in the hybridisation of Apertium and Moses technologies.

Our active participation in this and other projects gives us the capacity to manage free sotfware projects.

Some of the news that have accompanied Prompsit from its creation have been collected in press releases. In chronological order, we would like to highlight the following:

• Prompsit business plan awarded the IMPIVA/CEEI prize for the most innovative project in the competition for New Business Ideas of the Fundación Universidad Empresa (Fundeun) (read the news at Las Provincias, La Verdad, Camernova, Fundeun).
• The Generalitat de Catalunya grants Prompsit and Taller Digital two projects for the creation of two open-source machine translators: Occitan–Catalan and Occitan–Spanish (read the news at Taller Digital, Universitat d’Alacant).
• The Institute of Applied Linguistics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in collaboration with ABC ENCIKLOPEDIOJ SL, the Catalan Association of Esperanto and Prompsit, develop an machine translator for Catalan–Esperanto and Spanish–Esperanto. In the future, it was expected to incorporate English (read the news at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Esperanto.es [1] [2]).
• Prompsit develops, along with the Universitat d’Alacant, the first automatic translator from Spanish to Basque (read the news at Barrapunto, Sustatu).
• The Apertium project is the only Spanish project that participates in the Google Summer of Code 2009, by initiative of the Universitat d’Alacant and Prompsit (read the news at
  Universitat d’Alacant, Universia, Vilaweb, Europa Press).
• A new translator for Apertium is released: the pair Welsh–English (read the news at The Guardian, University of Glamorgan).
• Universitat d’Alacant and Prompsit begin to develop a machine translator between Spanish and Spanish Sign Language (read the news at Universitat d’Alacant).

Prompsit team consists of professionals specialised in natural language processing, which have participated in the development of machine translation systems since 1998. Its members are software engineers and linguists coming from the research group Transducens at the Department of Software and Computing Systems from the Universitat d’Alacant. Some of the best known projects that have involved members of our team in the Transducens group are the Spanish – Catalan system interNOSTRUM, the Spanish – Portuguese system Traductor Universia, and the free/open-source machine translation platform Apertium.

The knowledge and experience acquired in these projects inspired us to create, in 2006, the company Prompsit Language Engineering as a spin-off of the university. That same year, the company received the award IMPIVA / CEEI for the most innovative project in the competition for New Business Ideas of the Fundación Universidad Empresa (Fundeun).

Over the years, Prompsit has specialised in the management of multilingual content generation processes with the support of new language technologies, especially ones related to machine translation. It has also specialised, thanks to its activity as the main developer of the Apertium platform, in the management of free software projects.
Our service offering continues to expand to answer the needs of our clients and take advantage of the technological advances of the ICT area.

Our commitment with innovation has been materialised in the participation of several R+D projects and some own projects that have given new and better products and services. Some of our results are visible through our own web translator, the web sites of our clients or as publications or press releases.

Some Prompsit’s customers are in the public sector, such as the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Universitat d’Alacant, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya or the Generalitat de Catalunya; others are companies such as Casadellibro.com, Ibermática, imaxin|software, Eleka Ingeniaritza Linguistikoa or Autodesk.
